Additional Surrender Information

Jane Monheit has a lovely voice, one that in its purest, most lilting form reminds you of the young Barbra Streisand, with the show-stopping qualities that suggests. Her haunting rendition of Sergio Mendes'"So Many Stars," the runaway highlight of Surrender, is also one of the best things she's ever done. (Mendes arranged and produced the track and plays keyboard on it.) Since she stopped trying so hard to be a jazz singer and found her mark as a popular vocalist specializing in Brazilian music (there are also guest turns by singer Ivan Lins and harmonica great Toots Thielemans), Monheit has sounded more at home with herself. The problem is, as delectable as her instrument is, her performances, more often than not, have a perplexing emptiness to them: they're like romantic settings with candles providing the requisite glow but no real warmth. She's only 29, which means she has plenty of time to deepen as an artist. But it could also be that what you hear now is what you're going to get in the future. --Lloyd Sachs

What Customers Say About Surrender:

After just seeing Ms Monheit at the Catalina Jazz Bar & Grill just before New Years Eve, I was flabbergasted at how amazing her voice sounds in person versus record plus she has an automatic rapport with her audience. Thus I decided to check this album out and was rarely disappointed except I wish they would've had an english translation of the Brazilian lyrics that Jane sang so beautifully. Also though I prefer the original Brasil '66 version of Sergio Mendes "So Many Stars" with Lani Hall, Monheit's version again with Sergio on piano comes a close second. If you're undecided about Jane, do check this one out and I absolutely adore her version of Mancini & Mercer's "Moon River" (my favorite track)--from the way she sings this beautiful tune, she must have seen "Breakfast At Tiffany" a thousand times.

I'd not heard of this young lady, and bought the cd purely on speculation, recognizing the names Sergio Mendes and Toots Thielemans, who worked with her on it, and recognizing two songs: "Moon River" and "Alfie." Much to my delight, I really like this music. The opening piece "If you went away" is a wonderful song, as is the really haunting "Rio de maio" composed by and sung in duet with Brasilian Ivan Lins. My reservation is that I wish there were more tracks.it's over far too soon.

I own a lot of CDs. but this one by Jane Monheit is my favorite. Turn on the water fountain, pour yourself a glass of good wine, settle back in a comfortable chair and be swept away by the magnificent voice and captivating style of a truly wonderful female vocalist. This is the CD I use to measure all the rest.LOP

I first heard Jane's voice on a local light Jazz station and added her to my "wish list", then purchased her CD "Taking a Chance on Love". As a lover of Samba and Bossa Nova and long time fan of Elise Regina it was a no brainer to follow that one up with "Surrender" when I saw that she sang Brazilian style music. I was not dissappointed in the cd, for me there was not a bad track on it. As a long time Sergio Mendez fan "So Many Stars" quickly became one of my favorite tracks, I hadn't really appreciated the depth of that song's lyrics until I heard Jane sing it.

All I can imagine is the power of PR over substance is what makes for a 'Popular Media recognized' Star. I love this womens voice and style far better than the majority of female songstresses who somehow receive far more publicity for lessor talent than Ms.

I absolutely love every track on the disc. What can I say.

This disc is the best yet. The entire disc contains lovely examples of Ms.

Monheit's beautiful voice, and the songs themselves take the listener to another level when listening. Monheit has displayed for the last few years.

However, due to her work, I shall forever believe that Jane Monheit is, and should be recognized as among the top five of the living 'Female' songstresses of 'any style of music'.
